Departments, labs, papers and students

Each school’s computing departments, plus every faculty member in any other department who publishes in computer-science venues; each faculty PI’s own lab, the PI’s papers written there, and the students they advise. Centres, initiatives and multi-PI groups are not labs, so they are not listed.

Michigan has known gaps. Student records currently cover 117 of 287 labs, 89 link checks remain open, and stored copies cover about 56% of papers. These records are incomplete and will be updated in later releases.

How labs, papers and students are decided

Departments. Full-department coverage targets Princeton CS; CMU’s seven School of Computer Science departments; MIT EECS; EPFL’s IC school; Berkeley EECS; Stanford CS; and Michigan CSE. Stanford EE and Michigan ECE list faculty who work in computer science. Michigan’s release retains the gaps described above. Faculty of any other department are covered when they work in computer science: their papers at the school are in CS venues (indexed by DBLP, the computer-science bibliography; at least 5 papers and a fifth of their output). They appear under their home department, which lists only those faculty.

Labs. Each faculty PI has one lab: the PI and their advisees. A PI is a faculty member with stated PhD advising or a lab they head. Only labs with at least one lab paper are listed; the count of labs not listed, and the reason for each, are kept with the data.

Papers. A paper is the lab’s when the PI is on the byline, the paper has a supported school connection, and it falls in the PI’s appointment. The school connection can come from the PI’s affiliation, reviewed paper text, or a stated advisee co-author at the school. A paper whose entire byline has no affiliations can also count when a stated advisee is on it. The appointment is a reviewed faculty period, or a captured department faculty listing from the paper’s own year; a listing after an evidenced move does not extend the appointment. The PI’s identity is anchored by their DBLP person page, their department’s publication list, their verified works, a reviewed OpenAlex author id or ORCID, an advisee co-author, or an OpenAlex author id seen on those.

Students and lab members. Stated advisees (rosters, theses, alumni pages, FPO announcements) and the people the PI’s own lab pages list: students, and also postdocs, staff and visitors, each with the role the page gives. The headline student count is students only. A student–paper link is the student’s recorded authorship of a lab paper (verified), or a supported name match on that lab paper’s byline (candidate). Candidate matching rejects different full given names, including hyphenated names, and disallows partial-prefix matches under East Asian family names.
